We just returned from Varadero last Saturday and while there, we took an organized tour via bus to Havana.
The tour cost $129 pesos including a visit to a cigar store, visit a rum museum and a lunch at a downtown restaurant ( chicken for lunch ) and supper at the Havana Libre hotel ( buffet much the same as the resort ( Iberostar Tainos ), downtown Havana. The tour included a 2 hours on your own to see some crafts market and a stroll downtown. This was a day trip leaving the resort at 08.00hours and returning the next morning at 03.00 hours.
While by ourselves, we felt safe walking downtown.
Certainly a trip to take as you will see mostly the old Havana.
The tour can be arranged at the hotel or through your tour representative on site.
There are tours in English, French, depending on the language that your speak. The English tour was on Wednesday and Saturday. I don't know about the french tour.
The trip included a visit at the Tropicana Nightclub, which is scheduled to close in April. It is a show similar to Las Vega with high pageantry ( worthwhile seeding. The cost of the show by itself is $90. pesos. It includes munchies and a bottle of rum for every 4 persons at the table and 2 bottles of Coke.
The bus takes approximately 2 1/2 hours to reach Havana as it stops at various hotels to pick up and drop off other hotel guests.
Just walking downtown is worthwhile by itself as we only seen 4 square blocks. We could have spent all day there. An overnight stay would have been better and cost only $30. pesos more per person.
