Hi Jasonflk,

I saw your response to Jeana on the Penguins. How easy is it to get a taxi when there is a cruise ship in port. I was thinking of booking something independently, but am sceptical as I have also heard that cruise boats have by-passed this port of call due to winds.

Which leads me to another question: I thought that Port Stanley was a protected harbour and therefore tenders could bridge ship & shore. How mistaken I was, even after studying the location of the place.

I will be there on Mar 8 and looking forward to setting foot there, after all I have heard and learnt.

I'm arriving on the 1st of March, fishing in the western Islands until about the 8th. In Stanley and on local streams 'til the Lindblad ship comes in on the 11th. Anything special going on at the end of the first week of March?

Recommendations for pubs and restaurants? Already have a battlefield tour booked for Sunday.

Getting a taxi is normally not a big problem they and other tourist operators/tour guides are around the jetty. However if its a busy day there might be a wait , not so many taxis in a small place like this.

Pre booking is always useful for longer tours as you can get an accredited tour etc rather than a taxi driver. Most tour guides take money when you arrive so if the cruise ship does by-pass there isn't a loss of money.

Stanley is a protected harbour however most ships anchor out at port william as the harbour can't take or the captains won't risk getting in.

Port william is protected but if there is a strong wind you will still get choppy weather and the problem is the bravery of the passengers/crew in going ashore by tender. Saying that out of all the cruise ships this year a few have by-passed on perfect days and depends on the captain and is they are running late. Recently one ship surprised as all as it was fairly choppy in the harbour but passengers stll made it ashore.

Any more question just reply to this post. Sorry for the delay I don't check this forum all the time.

Hi Jasonflk, Thank you for your response. I have in the meantime reserved a tour with one of your local people and I am certainly looking forward to it.

If someone is looking for accommodations, dining, shopping or entertainment in the quiet and relaxing harbour village of Port Stanley, you’ve come to the right place. Our new portstanley.net website will provide you with all the information you need to make great choices when visiting and vacationing in our beautiful village.

We have great beaches and bridges, benches and berms, talented artists and terrific shopping, sailing and golfing, dining and drinking, live summer theatre and historical train rides all within easy walking distance from the middle of the village. We have two of Ontario’s finest Inns, cozy cottage rentals and warm B & Bs that invite you to linger and stay a while longer and leave the car parked for the weekend.

Come and see why many artists and residents choose to live here. Perhaps it’s the sounds of the surf, the echoes of our big band past, the sights of the lake, the nostalgia of walking a historical route, or casually beachcombing any time of the year while watching the sun rise or set on one of our two beaches. Maybe it’s the excellent shopping with a wide range of products and services, clothing boutiques, superb cuisine, and genuine hospitality and attention to detail from our many owner-operated, independent retailers. Or perhaps it’s just the temperate, year-round climate, the unique flora and fauna of our Carolinian micro-climate and the relaxed and inviting pace of a small and very beautiful harbour village.
