As Candybabe says, depends who you are taking photo`s of, children are usually fine (couple of rupees or some sweets), if you come across any of the hippy travellers be very careful as they don`t really like cameras pointed at them and i have seen cameras snatched and film removed, this also goes for any holy men. Asking first if in doubt is always the politest and best way to deal with this situation...... Happy snapping ;-)

Dear Whiskas

Taking photos is acceptable and offering a few rupees to the subject would be a good idea. Depends on who you are photographing, of course. We took a photo of two young sisters selling fruit by the side of the road, got it developed, and then gave them the photo the next day. They were over the moon - probably the first photo of themselves ever! The smiles on their faces said it all.
