Bongo, feel free to take GBP with you, or your visa/mastercard. Cash dispensers are readily available and you can withdraw as much money as you need (subject to your bank allowance). However, do AVOID using high street currency exchange services. You may be tricked into a dodgy deal. Go to a bank branch instead (they charge commission, but it not very high.) Do not take USD or Euros, and have a look at xe.com for a typical exchange rate several days prior to your trip. This will give you a good reference of what exchange rate to expect. Please feel free to ask specifics. Sincerely, xOOx.

Dear Bongo, Take whatever currency you want -- you will be able to change it into Bulgarian Leva pretty much anywhere. Euros work fine, as Bulgaria has so many European visitors now. In fact, the Bulgarian coinage looks very much like Euro coinage, and you can use Euro coins at Sofia airport for releasing a baggage cart. Just keep you wits about you if you are in a resort. I would disagree about using your bank card -- first, you will pay a commission charge and second you won't find many cash machines outside Sofia. We always take cash and it works for us.

Hi Bea It depends how you want to travel - it's a long way by train, and might take 15-20 hours, that's just to Sofia. But there may be a train that goes across and misses out Sofia. Still take ages, tho. I'm working on times it took a journey I used to do regularly when I lived in Turkey, which was Istanbul-Budapest. It was about 30 hours in all, and about 12 of them to Sofia. Forget it by bus, obviously... You could fly, though - I guess it'd be cheap enough. And I really recommend the Hungarian airline Malev - very comfortable. Have a good trip.
