I plan to travel to Yoshkar-ola to visit a friend i have made on the internet. I am worried about travelling in russia, can anyone give me some advice on how to get there, via Moscow/Kazan. Which is the best way, and what to watch out for? Is it safe to travel alone! Thanks .. Jeff

Traveling alone in Russia is as safe as traveling anywhere else if one uses normal common sense precautions you would use traveling to other places.



Peruse the TA Russia forums and you will probably find answers to most of your questions.

The safest way to travel to Yoshkar-Ola is flying to Kazan (1 1/2 hr away from Y Ola) via Lufthansa. I usually fly from US to Frankfurt and then to kazan.

Thankyou for your advice ! i have been to most eastern European countries ( Warsaw, Budapest, Bratislava, Krakow ) so i think i should be Ok! But Russia is a different ball game i think? But will be careful for the trip. Any other advice for travelling via Train from Moscow to Yoshkar -ola ? and things to watch out for in reginal cities .

Hello Jeff, My name is Don Eudy and I have been to Yoshkar-Ola several times and I always have a great time there. You can fly from Moscow to Yoshkar-Ola in the summer months or ride a train any time of the year. For the most part it is a safe trip as long as you are careful. Also be careful in Moscow and stay out of the strip clubs and bars. I have several friends in Moscow that will help you to get from the airport to the train station if you need. I also have a very good friend in Yoshkar-Ola that speaks very good English and he will be glad to help you if needed. Please feel free to call me if I can help. I plan on going back to Russia this fall and maybe you might like to go. Let me know if you are going to meet a woman in Yoshkar-Ola and I will fill you in there also.
