I'm going to Mumbai/Goa in January 2005 with a friend. We're in our 50's, want a low-key place, and a reputable yoga retreat/classes in Goa. Any suggestions?! Also, I'm a woman and will be wandering around Mumbai for a few days alone. Tips? Places to go/see? Thanks!

Firstly, its a good idea to give the raging new years eve crowds a miss and only arrive in Goa in Jan. Most peak season rates are not valid beyond the first week of Jan. Secondly, a lot would depend on how much you want to spend on your hotel, this will determine the facilities you can have access to, like a good yoga instructor etc. Mumbai, now that's an interesting one. Be prepared for the teeming millions, this however lends to Mumbai being vibrant and alive. Generally safe, I would follow the LP Guide Book, its usually bang on.

Try Zambala in Vagator beach for yoga/accommodation. I think they have 1-week yoga retreats. There is also an Iyengar place in Arambol....

As for Mumbai. It's a big city with a huge, I repeat, huge, population of destitute people. If you are a woman travelling alone and not used to India, I recommend staying within the well-trodden tourist area, ie, Colaba. A trip to Chor Bazaar, or thieves market, is definitely interesting, but not for the faint of heart. There are a range of hotels, so it really depends on how much you want to spend. Take a day trip by ferry to the island of Elephanta to see the caves. I believe that it is closed on Mondays, though, so plan accordingly. The Taj Mahal Hotel is directly across from the Gate of India, and that is where the ferry to Elephanta departs from.

Try Purple Valley Yoga retreat in Anjuna. Close to great beaches and very low key approach to Yoga. You can stay at the retreat or stay off-site and utilize the drop-in yoga facilities. You can find more information on Purple Valley on the web. I went two years ago and thinking of returning soon!
